Your Right to Refuse The following
article points to the moms legal right to refuse to have a C- Section, even in the hospital. Many hospitals have
"banned" the practice of VBAC ( vaginal birth after Cesarean Section), because they are afraid of lawsuits.
However, a mom does NOT have to use that hospital or care provider and can leave and go to another hospital or locating
another care provider, midwife or birth center.

Breast Feeding Study on Benefits, Cost: 900 Lives and Billions of Dollars Could Be Saved Annually Huffington
Post By Lindsey Tanner April 5, 2010 "CHICAGO — The lives of nearly 900 babies would be saved
each year, along with billions of dollars, if 90 percent of U.S. women fed their babies breast milk only for the first six
months of life, a cost analysis says. Those startling results, published online Monday in the journal Pediatrics,
are only an estimate. But several experts who reviewed the analysis said the methods and conclusions seem sound." Breastfeeding

C-Section NOT Best option for Breech Birth Globe Life by Carla Wintersgill June 17, 2009 The
following article starts off by stating, " Physicians should no longer automatically opt to perform a cesarean section
in the case of a breech birth..... the guidelines are a response to new evidence that shows that many women are safely able
to vaginally deliver babies who enter the birth canal with the buttocks or feet first. " Apparently, the article says, since so many C sections are now being done ( over 38% nationally), most doctors
are NOT trained on delivering a breech baby and thus C sections have become the "preferred" method of delivery in
breech birth. According to Dr. Lalonde ( Executive Vice President of the Society of Obstetricians and Gynecologoists of Canada
), there " is a serious shortage of doctors to teahc and perform these deliveries". However, with the release
of the new guidelines, the SOGC will start a national training program in Canada to ensure that doctors can preform
vaginal delivery of breech births. Many midwives have been doing vaginal delivery of breech births all along. Lets hope
the practice spreads to doctors in the United States as well.

More Mothers Can
Be Saved-CIMS Recommends Mother Friendly Care in Response to Joint Commission Report on Maternal Mortality
PR Web March 16, 2010
" In its recently publicized Sentinel Alert # 44, Preventing Maternal Deaths,
the Joint Commission, a not-for-profit organization that accredits and certifies health care organizations in the United States,
reported that maternal mortality is on the rise in the U.S. The report found that two of the four preventable pregnancy-related
deaths were associated with cesarean section-the failure of hospital staff to pay attention to worsening vital signs after
women have the operation, and the staff's inability to respond appropriately to hemorrhage resulting from a cesarean. The
two others are uncontrolled high blood pressure and undiagnosed fluid build-up in the lungs of women with pre-eclampsia (pregnancy
induced hypertension). Research conducted by the Coalition For Improving Maternity Services (CIMS) shows that by following
the principles of the evidence-based Ten Steps of The Mother Friendly Childbirth Initiative (MFCI) and giving low-risk women
access to midwifery care mothers' lives could be saved."

Midwife, Doula or Doctor Just The
Facts Baby By Sidney Loney The following article is a helpful guide on the strengths of a doctor, a doula
and a midwife. It simply walks a mom through various questions we should ask when making the decision to a provider.
The article stresses the issues of doing your homework before settling on a specific provider. Doulas are with the mom during
the entire birth, supporting, comforting and caring for her and her partner , in whatever way she ( they need).
It is very important that the mom have the kind of support she wants during the birth, so that she can feel comfortable
and trust her provider, as well as her surroundings. For many moms, the hospital setting is very intimidating. Midwives tend
to be much more gentle, and are concerned with everything that is going on with the mom, not just the physiological
state of her pregnancy. So, choose your provider well. Be informed. Ask questions...create a birth plan ( your vision
of the birth)... and the best birth possible for both you and your baby.
