Amnesty International Report
on Maternal Mortality in US
Amnesty International released its report on maternal mortality in the US on
March 12, 2010. This very extensive report documents the extremely high rate of maternal mortality in the US. Citing causes
such as C Sections and the high rate of medical interventions, Amnesty International states, along with CDC, that the actual
numbers are much higher then the documented ones due to the fact that not all maternal deaths are recorded as maternal deaths.

No Need For Moms to Fast During Labor
by John Gever, Senior Editor Medpage Today Jan. 2010
This article points out what midwives, doulas
and many health care people have been saying for years. That it is not necessary to avoid food and drink when a mom is in
labor. The energy and strength that she will get from eating far outweighs the possibility of having to go into surgery
for an emergency C Section. Moms need their energy, babies need their energy. Eating during labor is a good thing.

Induction of Labor: What You Need to Know About Induction of Labor Childbirth Connection Jan. 2011 The following article speaks to
the many "reasons" that women are given to convince them to
agree to having their labor induced. "Rates of Induction of labor are on the rise...." the article states, as are rates of C-Sections.. Possible connection?????? The article clarifies the confusion and disagreement
surrounding the reasons and safety of inducing laobr. Lack of knowledge
about when, why, and how and if inducing is even safe for the mom and the baby
fuel the moms fear of possible harm to the baby, or herself. In conclusion
the article says: "The belief that the best way to manage risks in pregnancy is to deliver the baby. Fortunately,
it is uncommon in this day and age for a baby born at full-term to die around the time of birth or experience serious illness
or injury. However, these outcomes still occur despite advances in obstetric and neonatal care. Doctors or midwives may recommend
inducing labor as a way of lowering the chance of these problems happening. However, it is impossible to know which women
should be induced because injury and death are often unpredictable. As a result, thousands of women may have labor induced
to prevent just one injury or death, and all of those women and babies will be exposed to the risks of labor induction, which
may include cesarean surgery, instrumental delivery (assisted by forceps or vacuum extraction), and newborn breathing problems."

The House of Lite The House of Lite is a project of the Tatia Oden French Memorial Foundation. We are in the process of establishing
the House of Lite, a new kind of transition home for single moms and
their newborns. The House of Lite will be located in an area of low crime, easy access to transportation and have all the
support systems needed to "break the cycle" of living in an
area of high crime, and continuing to remain on the general assistance rolls of the county. We will open the first House of
Lite in Oakland Calif. A successful fundraiser was held on March
3, 2011 at La Pena Cultural Center in Berkeley, however, we still need funds in order to open our doors. We raised over 50% of our $10,000 goal. Our last event was held on Thurs. Oct. 20 7-9pm
at La Pena, Cultural Center, 3105 Shattuck Ave., Berkeley, Calif. The event focused on the issue of Maternal Mortality and was co-sponsored by Amnesty International.
You can make a tax-deductable donation to House of Lite, just use the PayPal button
